During our hands-on testing, all the tools performed well and left similar finishes in their own way. We found very few differences among all the tools that earned a spot on the top picks list. In order to get the widest array of uses in a single side-by-side sander test—everything from bulk stock removal to detailing a surface—we chose to see how the tools performed on a beat-up, weather-stained Hem-Fir 2×10 that had been outside for a few months.

As we wanted to re-create typical use for the sanders, each sander was used with three grits of sandpaper: rough (50-grit), medium (80-grit), and fine (120-grit).
