DS Smith Packaging Launceston: Macfarlane Packaging/feelunique.com, Beauty Products Postal Pack

Scooping the award is DS Smith Packaging Launceston, who worked with Macfarlane Packaging to come up with a corrugated postal pack for feelunique.com to carry beauty products for consumers who shop on the web. The brief was to provide a fast, no mess, no tools way of packing for the customer and consumers.

The pack, made from E flute corrugated board, is printed and die-cut inline and incorporates an external adhesive closure device, an opening tear strip plus a specially developed internal ‘impact glue-line’ which holds a wide range of beauty products firmly in place during transit. The design was developed to help stop the product being pulled out of the side flaps during delivery and to show any pilfer or tamper evidence caused during transit.

Results have been impressive with warehousing space savings of around 40% while the pack is quick to erect and fill, saving 30% in time and labour. The judging panel felt it was worthy of top spot and is a perfect example of packaging innovation in the online retail world.

DS Smith Packaging Burwell: Transit Pack for a Ceramic Water Filter Cartridge

DS Smith Burwell’s customer ships ceramic water filters throughout Europe and the US. Often they travel individually through the postal and courier systems. The fragility of the ceramic filter cartridge led DS Smith Burwell to look at ways of deflecting any forces the pack might receive from an impact. The result is a one-piece die-cut where the ceramic cartridge is protected by an internal cradle arrangement sitting at 45 degrees to the outer pack. The pack is constructed from R flute for optimum performance and pallet utilisation.
